The Rent Deposit Scheme

The Rent Deposit/Bond Scheme Scheme offers help to homesless people looking to rent a home from a private landlord.

What is it?

The Rent Deposit Scheme comes in the form of a bond or guarantee which replaces a deposit with the Tenancy Protection Scheme. The bond or guarantee acts as a deposit to cover rent arrears / wilful damage up to the value of the bond. We may also sometimes apply for cash deposits for rent in advance from the discretionary housing payments or from the homeless prevention fund.

How do I qualify?

To qualify for the scheme you must:

  • be homeless, threatened with homelessness through no fault of your own or can demonstrate a housing need.
  • have a local connection to Wolverhampton (as defined by homeless legislation)
  • be unable to afford a rent deposit or rent in advance
  • be willing and able to maintain a tenancy and engage with support if required / needed
  • agree to inform the scheme of any changes in your circumstances
  • agree to housing benefit being paid direct to the landlord / agent
  • agree to address any rent arrears or anti-social behaviour.

What next?

You need to:

  • find a property you are interested in
  • gain all of the details of whether a bond will be accepted, for what amount and if cash fees are needed
  • ensure you are able to afford it, so generally keep the costs within your local housing allowance where possible (please see below)
